Week 7: 64 touchdowns, 2 ATDs

HOU@AZ: Corner flyover 1

This week features no scores that are outrageously awful, just a couple of end zone flyovers where neither ball carrier makes first contact beyond the goal line fully inbounds — our standard for a legit TD.

Arizona’s James Conner finishes his 18-yard run by planting his right foot in front of the goal line and allowing his left foot to straddle the sideline, meaning his left foot is out of bounds. (See below.)

Conner did not have to worry about where his left foot wound up, since he felt confident he had broken the plane and, by the existing rule, he was assured of six points. If our rule had been in force, Conner would need to be less casual and make certain his first point contact beyond the goal line is fully in bounds. Hocus Bogus rating: 1.5

NYJ@NE: Corner flyover 2

This is really close, and we don’t have the benefit of an end zone view to confirm our thinking, but we believe that Brandon Bolden’s first point of contact beyond the goal line is his right foot, and that foot just barely catches the sideline — and thus would be ruled out of bounds.

So, to be consistent with the letter of our proposed new law, we would place the ball inside 1, first-and-goal for the Patriots. Rating: 1
